Scope and Contents
These four account books of prominent Baltimore businessman William Patterson (1752-1835) relate primarily to his merchant and shipping activities. They chronicle merchant shipping matters, plantation affairs, services performed, the education of his children, ground rents, and debts owed to estates. Patterson's Will is also included in this collection and it contains a preface, written in 1827, that recounts his life in County Donegal, Ireland, his shipping business in Philadelphia and the West Indies, his arrival in Baltimore during 1778 and investments in real estate, and his involvement in the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad.
