Biographical / Historical

Honorable John Stevens Sellman (1805-1869) was a farmer and politician from Anne Arundel County, Maryland. He was a member of the Maryland House of Delegates from Anne Arundel County in 1827, 1829, 1833, and 1841, and a member of the Maryland Senate from Anne Arundel County 1842-1847, 1849, 1852, 1862, and 1864. In 1850, he served as a member of the Maryland State Constitutional Convention from Anne Arundel County. Sellman owned a farm near Davidsonville called 'Fruitful Plains.'

In 1824, Sellman married Mary Dorsey (1806-1832), daughter of Richard Dorsey of Anne Arundel County. They shared four children: Leonard (1827-1836); Richard Dorsey (1829-1898), married Evalina Dorsey; Mary Anne Jenetta (1831-1928), married Ramsay Hodges; and John Stevens (1832-1834). Mary Dorsey died in 1832, and Sellman married his second wife, Sarah Maynard (1811-1870), daughter of Samuel Maynard of Annapolis, in 1834. Their children included: Samuel Thomas (1835-1838); Anne Callahan (1838-1849); Harriet Maynard (1841-1927); Catherine Wallace (1843-1849); Charles Wallace (1846-1927), married Anna Matilda Iglehart; George Constantine (1848-1880); Louis Neth (1851-1902); and Maria Elizabeth (1853-1860).
