In 1803 Jerome Bonaparte, youngest brother of the Emperor, visited this country, and while attending the races at Baltimore, fell in love with the beautiful Elizabeth Patterson. She reciprocated his affection, and her ambition was gratified by his oreference. "I had rather." she said, "be the wife of Jerome Bonaparte for an hour than any other man's for life." Forgetting France, fame, and fortune for love, he disregarded the disapprobation of his brother, and made her his wife at Christmas, the Bishop of Baltimore performing the ceremony. Napoleon in great wrath called on Pope Pius VII to annul the marriage, sending him a persuasively magnificent gold tiara to aid his endeavor. The Pope refused, but the members of the Council of State were amenable to Napoleon's reasoning. Mme. Bonaparte, though forobidden, visited Europe hoping to win the Emperor's consent, but he denied her..." See sheet of paper for more of the story.
