Atavis, Martha Ann "Patty" (circa 1816-1874); Whitridge, Anna, undated
Dates
- undated
Biographical Note
Martha Ann "Patty" Atavis was an enslaved woman in the home of Doctor John Whitridge of Baltimore. She was sold to Whitridge in 1839 and cared for the family’s children, including Anna, until her death. She is buried next to another of her charges, Olivia Whitridge (1837-1839), in Baltimore's Green Mount Cemetery. An earlier identification misidentified the young girl here as Alice Lee Whitridge. A daguerreotype of this same image exists in a private collection and within the case for that item was a handwritten note identifying the young girl as Anna Whitridge.
