Ambrotype portrait of Wilhelm Frederick Vordemberge (1829-1896), circa 1857. The image was taken on the occassion of his engagement to Wilhelmina Niemann.

Biographical / Historical

Wilhelm Frederick Vordemberge was born on October 5, 1829 in Engter, Germany. He immigrated in 1853 with his mother and sister from Bremen to Baltimore aboard the Johannes. In 1857, he married Wilhelmina Niemann (1835-1912), and the couple were parents to eight children, of whom six survived: Herman (1859-1889); Henry Christoph (1861-); Mary Anna (1863-); Louis Matthew (1865-); Caroline (1867-1925); and Elizabeth (1869-1945). The Vordemberges owned a grocery story located on 230 Hanover Street in Baltimore. He died of sepsis on November 27, 1896 at the age of 67. He is buried in Baltimore Cemetery.
