Biographical / Historical

Isaac Trimble, chief engineer and superintendent of railway at start of Civil War; became General with Confederate Army. Charles Howard was president of the Baltimore and Susquehanna Railroad, served as president of the Board of Police Commissioners from 1860-1861 until his arrest for allegedly sympathizing with the South.

Summary: May 3, 1861 letter from Isaac Trimble (1802-1888), chief engineer and superintendent of railway, to Charles Howard 1802-1869), Board of Police, concerning Howard's order to reduce volunteer defenders of Baltimore to a force of 100 men. Trimble suggests paying volunteer forces at the Calvert Station soldier's wages (25 cents per day) for their service. The men at the station were unemployed laborers and Trimble believed their discharge would be disorderly if they were not compensated.
