Summary: On the cover page of this small diary is written: "Corp. David Murdoch, Co. A 8th Regt. MD, Vols., Enlisted 13th Aug 1862 For the period of three years, unless sooner discharged." Corporal Murdoch has written a detailed account of his life in the army. He tells of daily movements mentioning Williamsport, Sharpsburg, Maryland Heights, and Harpers Ferry, among others. At one point he states that they have marched 60 miles in two days. He tells of foraging for food and obtaining apples, potatoes, and chickens. At times they slept outside at others in log cabins, shelters made of fence rails, and at Sharpsburg in a large church. When on furlough he traveled home with $300 to deliver to soldiers' families.
