Summary: Glad to hear Sarah is safely home and hopes she remains there securely. L. and children well, Betsey was sick for 10 days. Several members of family had pneumonia. Health of friends mentioned. News of friends in the Southern? army, particularly at Vicksburg. Yankee headquarters in friend's house. Care of sick and wounded makes them stay. Is planting corn and cotton, but mostly corn for the army-damns those who plant only cotton in hope of gain. Feels God will help the south triumph and gain power through tribulation. Some negroes sick, particularly with pneumonia, but little sickness among whites. Intends to spin own cloth. Says corn "its truly the staff of life now in the Confederacy." Have little coffee, may not last with coming of refugees.
