Biographical / Historical
Tripp served in both the Army and the Navy until 1867. He enlisted on April 23, 1864 for three years at the age of 24 and worked as a landsman on the U.S.S. Saginaw, St. Mary's, and Lancaster. He was born in Talbot County (Md.) and appears to have been illiterate as he signed his forms with an "X."

General
Summary: Contains 4 items of military records. The first item is a blank receipt from the Treasurer of the State of Maryland. The second item is a handwritten discharge for Tripp from the U.S.S. Lancaster and the Naval Service, dated March 18, 1867, and signed by Captain David B. Ridget and Paymaster Edward Foster. A discharge form from the 30th Regiment of Colored Troops, dated April 15, 1864, releasing Tripp to join the Navy is the third item. The fourth is a legal form, titled "State of Maryland Bounty,"dated March 24, 1867, which affirms three years of service, his hounorable discharge form, and his application for $100 due to him by the Acts of the General Assembly of Maryland of 1864, Chapter 15. Tripps attorney and agents were listed on the form as Lister and Supplier.
