Trimble was wounded and taken prisoner by Union soldiers at the battle of Gettysburg. He was held for over a year, until he was released in a prisoner exchange in 1865.

Summary: A manuscript poem or song written by Major General Isaac R. Trimble of the Confederate Army while he was held as a prisoner of war on Johnson's Island, dated February 22, 1864. The work displays Trimble's belief in Confederate Nationalism. Union Major Belden transcribed the poem/song for Trimble because of his deportment at the camp.
