Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The collection consists of 2 boxes with 11 folders containing 233 modern photoprints from negatives made circa 1900-1910, most by S. Steuart Hoopper, an amateur photographer. The negatives are primarily glass, with some film. Some of the photos were made by Hoopper's wife Julia Fowler Hoopper, and some by Hoopper's cousin William H. Radcliffe from Dorchester County. There last folder in the collection contains 15 modern photoprints for which negatives exist but for which no documentation is available.

The collection depicts the Hoopper family members and homes, as well as scenes in Baltimore and the vicinity. These include the 1903 Elks Convention, 1904 Baltimore Fire, and views of Waverly, Govans, and Lutherville. There are also scenes at Pen-Mar, Maryland, Atlantic City, New Jersey, and Niagara Falls, New York.

The negatives on the inventory are all glass, however the accession record mentions film negatives which were not documented elsewhere; these may be among the negatives to the images numbered PP43.205-.355, of which prints and negatives to only PP43.341-.355 were found. PP43.341-.355 were printed from glass negatives.
