Biographical / Historical

Robert C. Buchanan was a United States military officer who attained the rank of brevet major general in recognition for his service in the American Civil War at the Second Battle of Bull Run and the Battle of Fredericksburg in 1862. General Buchanan had previously seen service in the Black Hawk War (1832), Mexican-American War (1846-1848), and the Rogue River Wars in Oregon (1855-1856). He retired from active service in 1870, and died in 1878.

Scope and Contents

General Robert C. Buchanan's military correspondence consists of U. S. Commissions, orders, and other official documents pertaining to his career. Buchanan's personal letters are addressed to his mother and sister. Letters from the Adams family of Boston. Subjects of the papers include: reports of Black Hawk War, the Florida campaign of 1838, the Mexican War, service in the Rogue River War, 1856-1858, Civil War career, service in Louisiana 1868-1870, dealing with Ku Klux Klan affairs, the Buchanan Terrapsack and portable boat.
