Biographical / Historical

Bill Canelos [Aristides W. Canelos] was born either in 1926 or 1927 in Baltimore to William and Mary Canelos (sometimes spelled Kanelopoulos). The family home stood at 2029 West Saratoga Street. He had a sister named Anastasia and a brother named James. Bill graduated from City College and the College of Commerce, where he studied accounting. He served in the Navy in the South Pacific during World War II. For six years, until his death, he headed the local office of the Wechsler-Mid-Atlantic Coffee Company handling institutional sales in Maryland, Washington and Virginia. Canelos married Everstine Eurydice Mitchell and they had two daughters: Paula M. and Christina A. He died in 1973.

This collection primarily contains correspondence mailed to Seaman Bill Canelos of Baltimore, Maryland between 1943-1944 during World War II. Correspondents include his mother, Mary, and sister, Anastasia, as well as various relatives and female acquaintances in Baltimore.
