Abstract

This collection contains an album of approximately 91 photographs assembled by Baltimore-native Arthur Gray (1896-1963) during his training at Camp McClellan (now Fort McClellan) in Alabama as well as his service in France during World War I, circa 1917-1919.

Biographical / Historical

Arthur William Gray was born in Baltimore, Maryland on January 15, 1896 to Mary Jane Warner and William Gray. He had three younger siblings: Maggie, Milton, and Marie. When America joined the war effort in 1917, Gray volunteered for the 1st Maryland Ambulance Corps. His service number was 1,274,348. He trained at Fort McClellan in Alabama, before going to France in 1918. According to "Maryland Military Men, 1917-1918", he is listed as serving in the Meuse-Argonne sector from July 15, 1918-May 21, 1919 as part of the 104th Sanitary Training, 29th Division. According to the US Army Transport Service Passenger List, he returned home on the troop ship Manchuria and was honorably discharged on June 2, 1919. He was promoted to Sergeant during his service and according to verbal accounts from family, Arthur was wounded by gas, which affected him throughout his life. He married Irene Hook (1900-1992), and they had a daughter together, Phyllis Bercaw (1921-1969). Arthur Gray died on January 29, 1963 at the age of 67.

Scope and Contents

This collection contains an album of approximately 91 photographs assembled by Baltimore-native Arthur Gray (1896-1963) during his training at Camp McClellan (now Fort McClellan) in Alabama as well as his service in France during World War I. Arthur volunteered for the 1st Maryland Ambulance Corps and served in France in 1918 as part of the 104th Sanitary Train, 29th Division. The 104th Sanitary Train was comprised of Maryland and Virginia National Guard ambulance and hospital units. Photos include portraits of Arthur as well as group shots with his fellow servicemen.
