Separated Materials

Missing (as of 10/77) is one letter (1822 Sept. 6) on land dispute between Charles Carroll of Carrollton and James Letts. The land was in Queen Anne's county. Letter mentions seeing Mr. James E. Barroll in Chestertown, who is in suit with Mr. Bordley.

Scope and Contents

This is an collection of 30 items written to, by, or about Charles Carroll of Carrollton (1737-1832). Includes: letters of advice from his father Charles Carroll of Annapolis on his education (1758-1759); a copy of his parents' marriage certificate (Charles Carroll of Annapolis and Elizabeth Brooke) marriage certificate (1757) and his dispensation to marry his cousin Rachel Cooke (1766); letters on Bohemia Manor title, Carrollton boundaties (1787); and taxes (1793); a 1854 letter referring to Charles Carroll of Carrollton's participation in 1784 on the commission to study improvements of the Potomac as far as fort Cumberland; a letter to his daughter Mary Carroll Caton, 1803 a citation by the City of Annapolis for riding in a carriage with his servant (1811); a letter to his son Charles Carroll Jr. about bilding a house at Folly, 1812; a letter presenting CC of with the pick, spade, hammer and trowell used to groundbreak the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad; an invitation to Colonel Fox, 1829; a petition to build a monument to Mrs. Mary Washington, Geroge Washington's mother (1831), and some financial bonds and receipts.



Other items include a letter about Charles Carroll Harper's share of Charles Carroll of Carrollton's estate (1831); a list of books owned by Charles Carroll of Carrollton's estate (1852); a letter to his partners Charles Carroll Barrister, Benjamin Tasker and Walter Dulaney; and a letter (1845) for Charles Carroll of Carrollton's granddaughter Lady Wellesley (Mary Caton, d. 1853) concerning the Jennings family.



In addition to correspondence, the following items are included: copies of Charles Carroll of Carrollton and Rachel Cooke marriage dispensation and marriage license; Charles Carroll of Annapolis and Elizabeth Brook marriage certificate; Oct 4 1737 Ignatius Davis invoice; Jan 31, 1811 City of Annapolis Warrent; account sheet of money owed by Thomas Lee 1791-1818; notations on legal actions involving Joh Duncan in 1816 and Samuel Hughes in 1808 and 1819; 1825 George Elliott account sheet; June 1, 1831 Geroge Bassett et al; Jan 1, 1852 index to Charles Carroll's books etc. and 1967 family traditions exerpts from Shauk-Free Families of Maryland.
