Biographical / Historical

The Rev. Lewis Beeman Browne (1867-1955) was born in Baltimore, the son of Lewis Beeman (1821-1888) and Augusta Jessop Bayless (1846-1877) Browne. Following attendance at Baltimore City College, he was ordained deacon in 1888, and became an Episcopalian priest in 1892. In 1890, he married Eva Poumairat. In the years 1888-1949, Rev. Browne served in Maryland parishes at Westernport, Sparrows Point, Raspeburg, Thurmont, Smithburg, Havre de Grace, Harford County, Frostburg, and Lonaconing. He became a member of the Ecclesiastical Court of the Diocese of Maryland in 1945.

Browne's relationship to the Jessop family is indicated on his 1907 membership application to the Maryland Historical Society, where he lists his maternal grandparents as "James P. Bayless and Mary Ann Jessop, who was daughter of Charles Jessop. Charles Jessop was son of William Jessop his wife, who was daughter of David and Mary Gorsuch".
