Biographical / Historical
Richard Thompson Baden (1868-1940) was born in Calvert County, Maryland, the son of Dr. Joseph A. Baden and Maria Catherine Thompson Baden. A graduate of Baltimore City College, Baden married Elinor Williams Robertson Baden (1869-1949) in 1895, and they had a daughter, Elinor Robertson Baden (born 1895); a son, Richard T. Baden, Jr. (1900-1902) died in infancy.
Richard Baden joined the Baltimore business community in 1886, working in the office of hardware firm Henry Keidel and Company. In 1898 he became office and financial department head for the firm, continuing in that role until 1916, when he organized the Holland, Baden and Ramsey company. Baden was active in both the Baltimore Association of Credit Men and the National Association of Credit Men, serving as president of the former in 1918-1920 and of the latter in 1925-1926.
The Nuttle family came from Denton, Maryland. Elbert Ray Nuttle (1884-1939) graduated from Dickinson College and from the University of Maryland School of Law, and came to work at the American Bonding Company in Baltimore in 1910, which was absorbed by the Fidelity and Deposit Company in 1926, at which time Nuttle became a vice president. His wife was Margaretta Pyles Nuttle (died 1979), and their 4 sons are: William R., John Clagett (born 1922), Elbert R. Jr., and Thomas O. The relationship of the Nuttle family to the Badens is not known.

Scope and Contents
The collection consists of one box with seven folders containing 101 photoprints and six negatives, which are undated or dated 1870-1955. The collection includes ambrotypes, tintypes, and platinum prints among other photograph types. Many of the images are unidentified or only partially identified, and few are dated. The subjects are portraits of Richard T. Baden, his wife Elinor Williams Robertson Baden and his daughter Elinor Robertson Baden, as well as group portraits including Richard Baden in business settings.
Also included are unidentified and partly identified portraits include members of the Nuttle and Baden families.
The collection also contains two folders of printed ephemera including programs and news clippings related to the Baltimore and National Associations of Credit Men, greeting and calling cards, and maps and pamphlets pertaining to Saint Marys County. There is also one envelope containing clippings of human hair from Baden family members and a souvenir penny.
