Biographical Note

Herman Maril (1908-1986), called the dean of Maryland painters, was born in Baltimore and educated at the Maryland Institute of Fine Arts. He was a modernist painter who was said to reduce figures and objects to their essence. He taught at the University of Maryland for 31 years and has been continuously represented by major galleries in New York since the 1930s. His subjects include urban and coastal landscapes and interior scenes. His works were exhibited at 40 one man shows beginning in 1935 at Howard University. They are included in the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, National Portrait Gallery, The Phillips Collection, Whitney Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Major retrospective shows of his work were exhibited at the Baltimore Museum of Art, Provincetown Art Association, Walters Art Museum and Wichita Art Museum. His work is currently shown at Debra Force Fine Art, New York City.

Scope and Contents

This collection contains two copies of an article published in the Baltimore Sun in which Herman Maril was asked to choose his favorite Baltimore work of art; he chose a Belgian Congo fetish from his personal collection. The photographs in the collection include several of Maril painting in his Baltimore studio, displays of his African art, and a notecard with a photograph of his painting “Cat and Candelabra.”
