Biographical / Historical

Karl E. Pfeiffer served as director of the Department of Forests and Parks during the 1930’s. He began his career with the government agency in 1913 as a summer assistant. He was hired as a full-time employee of the newly formed department in 1915 and rose through the ranks. His biggest accomplishment was creating the Patapsco State Park and even earned the nickname, “Mr. Patapsco,” for his efforts to expand the park. He retired from service after 46 years in 1959.

Pfeiffer was born in Brooklyn, New York. He attended school in Leipzig, Germany, and later graduated Lawrenceville Preparatory School in 1908. For his undergraduate and graduate studies, he went to Cornell University. In 1915, Pfeiffer married Annie Bullivant. He died on December 27, 1977.

Scope and Contents

The Patapsco River Valley Photograph Collection contains over 60 images of different views of the river across the state of Maryland. Many of the photographs are views of the Patapsco from roads and bridges in Anne Arundel, Baltimore, and Carroll Counties. Also included in the collection are photographs of a Maryland State Department of Forests and Parks mensuration trip to Jackson’s Mill in West Virginia.

The collection is comprised of 3 ½” x 4 ½” negatives and prints. Prints are included of most of the negatives. The original order of the collection appears to have been kept. One 5” x 7” photograph is in the collection and is stored in Medium Photographs.
