Arrangement

The Lillard Genealogical Collection is divided into six series: Family Files, General Correspondence, Subject Files, Writings, Notebooks, and Index Cards.

The Family Files contain notes, charts and correspondence on individual families. Those families with not enough data to warrant a separate folder have been placed in a general folder at the beginning of each alphabetical section. There are two folders in the oversize file containing charts for the Lillard, Bourne, Perry, Stout, and McQuiddy families. Boxes 1-7.

The general correspondence, arranged by decade, is mostly incoming letters from Jacques Ephraim Stout Lillard's family and fellow genealogists. Subjects include some family news but the main theme is genealogy. The information in these letters was so diversified that it was impossible to place them in any one folder in the Family Files series. One letter dated 16 May 1961 gives a description of the actor, Gary Cooper, by a former next door neighbor, John A. Sherman. Box 7.

The Subject Files chiefly contain Lillard's compilation of vital statistic records for several counties in Virginia and Kentucky and his notes from various genealogical reference sources (filed under miscellaneous) along with a few writings by other people. Box 8.

The Writings series contains typescripts of works written by Lillard. Boxes 9-10.

The Notebooks and Index Cards series contain more genealogical notes on various families and vital records. Boxes 11-12.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
