Biographical / Historical

Theodore Roosevelt McKeldin was born in Baltimore on November 20, 1900. He attended Baltimore City College and the University of Maryland where he earned a law degree in 1925. A Republican, in 1943 he was elected to his first term as Mayor of Baltimore, serving until 1947. In 1950, after three previous unsuccessful runs, McKeldin became the 53rd Governor of Maryland, after defeating incumbent Democrat William Preston Lane Jr. During his two terms as governor he became known for improvements of the state highway system and for his support of the civil rights movement.
