Biographical / Historical

The Rieman family of Maryland is descended from Daniel Rieman (1755-1829), a German immigrant who arrived in America in the 18th century. He established the first sugar refining business in Baltimore. His marriage to Catherine Peters produced twelve children, the oldest of which, Henry Rieman (1786-1865), took over the sugar refining business from his father after the latter’s retirement. Henry Rieman defended Baltimore in the War of 1812, receiving a land warrant for his service at the Battle of North Point. He later joined the pork packing trade, and together with his sons formed the firm of Henry Rieman and Sons, believed to be the largest pork packing business in the country from 1840-1855. The firm was offered large contracts to supply the Union Army during the Civil War, an offer they declined due to being Southern sympathizers. Henry Rieman married Mary Jones in 1807, and together they had ten children.

Joseph Henry Rieman (1822-1897) was the youngest son of Henry Rieman and Mary Jones. Born in Baltimore, he was educated in private schools before joining the firm Henry Rieman & Sons with his father and brother. He took charge of the western branches of the firm located in Cincinnati, Ohio and Terre Haute, Indiana. Later in his life he took up farming, and raised successful stock on his land called “Dumbarton Farm.” In 1861 Joseph Rieman married Annie Lowe from Dayton, Ohio. They would have seven children together, including Perlee Lowe Rieman (1862-1929), Mary Isabel Rieman Thom (1864-1936), Carlton Alexander Rieman (1868-1936), Charles Ellet Rieman (1870-1954), Joseph Robert Rieman (1872-1891), Annie Lowe Rieman (1878-1879), and Charlotte Lowe Rieman McIntosh (1880-1967).

The McIntosh family of Maryland is descended from David Gregg McIntosh (1836-1916) of Society Hill, South Carolina. He graduated from South Carolina College in 1855, studied law, and began a practice in partnership with W.W. Harllee at Darlington Court House. This practice was interrupted by the outbreak of the Civil War, at which point he joined the Confederate cause. He attained the rank of colonel and fought in a number of notable battles including Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Harper’s Ferry, and Antietam. After the war, he resumed his law practice in Towson, Maryland. He married Virginia Johnson Pegram of Richmond, Virginia. Together they had three children, including Virginia Pegram McIntosh (1866-1896), Margaret McIntosh Morton (1870-1942), and David Gregg McIntosh Jr., (1877-1940).

David Gregg McIntosh Jr., graduated in 1900 from the University of Maryland with a degree in law. He began to practice with his father in Towson, and later formed a partnership with James Thrift under the name McIntosh and Thrift, with whom he continued until his death. A Democrat, he was elected to the State Senate in 1919, and was re-elected in 1923, 1926, and 1930. In 1905 he married Charlotte Lowe Rieman, and together they had three children: Joseph Rieman McIntosh (1905-1990), Virginia Pegram McIntosh Williams (1909-1994), and David Greg McIntosh III (1911-1952). Both Joseph and David served honorably in World War II.

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of 88 photographs of the Rieman and McIntosh families from 1852-1926. While the subjects of the portraits are mostly direct members of the Rieman and McIntosh families, there are also photographs of certain cousins by the name of Lowe, Moritz, and Pegram. Many of the photographs have captions pasted onto the front of the picture, with additional handwriting on the back. These captions give the date of birth and death for the subject, as well as their relation to the Rieman and McIntosh families. Most of the photographs are wallet-sized, with only a few larger portraits and snapshots. Although clearly from the 19th century, many of the photographs are listed as “undated,” because a definitive decade was not proven. Where applicable, the name of the photographer or the studio has been listed.
