Abstract

Kenneth Elsworth Stewart, a resident of Baltimore, served in the United States Army during World War II. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and participated in the liberation of Paris. Mr. Stewart also served as Military Governor of the city of Zwickau/Saxony following the surrender of Germany. In 1954 he returned to service as commander of a tank warfare school in South Korea. The collection consists primarily of military records from Mr. Stewart’s time in service, as well as correspondence, newspaper clippings, and other miscellaneous items.

Biographical Note

Kenneth Elsworth Stewart (1907-1969) was born in Havre de Grace, Maryland and lived most of his life in Baltimore. He attended Garey’s Army and Navy Prep School in Baltimore and later entered Johns Hopkins University (Class of 1930). In 1926 he joined the Naval Reserve, remaining with the unit until receiving a commission as 2nd Lieutenant in the Army on June 12, 1929. In the 1930s he was posted at the Civilian Conservation Corps camp at Westernport, Maryland. After being trained in tank warfare at Pine Camp, New York he was sent to Australia and New Caledonia following the attack on Pearl Harbor. In 1943 he returned to the United States for training at Camp Polk, Louisiana, and was sent from there to England. He participated in the liberation of Paris in 1944. Major Stewart also fought in the Battle of the Bulge and served as Military Governor of the city of Zwickau/Saxony after the German surrender until control of the city was passed to the Soviet Union.

In 1954 he was recalled to service and became the commander of an armored warfare school in South Korea, helping to train the Republic of Korea (ROK) tank forces. He was awarded the Chungmu Distinguished Military Service Medal with Gold Star by the South Korean Government. In 1957 he was discharged from the Army and lived in Baltimore until his death in 1969.

PP 0243, Kenneth Elsworth Stewart Photograph Collection, circa 1899-1956 was created to house the photographs that were contained in the scrapbooks.

Scope and Contents

The bulk of the collection was originally placed in 3 photo albums containing the pictures and documents collected by Lt. Col. Stewart. The photographs have been removed and can be found in PP 0243.

The remaining items in the album labeled “Pacific” consist of correspondence, newspaper clippings, postcards, and military related documents from Stewart’s time in the Civilian Conservation Core up through his posting at New Caledonia. The second album “Europe” contains primarily newspaper clippings collected during the liberation of Europe in 1944-1945. It also contains postcards, military documents, and other miscellaneous items. The third album “Korea” consists of newspaper and magazine clippings, postcards, military documents and other items from Lt. Col. Stewart’s service in Korea.

There is also one folder containing 43 items, the majority of which are Mr. Stewart's military service records, including discharge notices, ROTC and Armored Force School certificates, and a commendation from President Harry Truman. A second folder contains a 14 page document “My War Experiences,” written by Mrs. Kenneth Stewart (Ruth Jones). It details her experiences during her husband’s service in the army. There is also a Diploma from the Infantry School for completion of the National Guard and Reserve Officers Course.

One item, a certificate of Ch'ungmu medal awarded to Stewart is located in framed storage.
