Biographical / Historical
Byron Carlyle Hall, Jr. was involved in several conservative political organizations during his time in Maryland. While a graduate student in physics at Johns Hopkins University, he joined Young Americans for Freedom and later became chairman of the Maryland chapter. Young Americans for Freedom was founded in 1960 by William F. Buckley as a conservative youth organization. Chapters cropped up on college campuses as a counter to the liberal movement. During the 1960’s and early 70’s, the group focused on such issues as the Vietnam War and the fight against the spread of global communism and worked to support the campaigns of local and national conservative candidates.
In his professional life, Hall taught mathematics and physics. He worked for Towson State College for some time before moving to Massachusetts and later Ohio. In 1997, Hall became embroiled in lawsuits over the fate of the Howard County home of his friend, Elizabeth C. Smith, Blandair. He has also published articles in the Lincoln Review and the American Journal of Physics.

The collection is divided into six series: Maryland Young Americans for Freedom, Individual Maryland chapters and Mid-Atlantic Young Americans for Freedom, National Young Americans for Freedom, Other Organizations, Elections, and Conservative Publications. These series follow the original order when apparent. Folders retain the titles given by Hall in most cases and retain the original order which was not always chronological.

Scope and Contents
The collection primarily contains papers related to Byron C. Hall Jr.’s involvement in the Maryland chapter of Young Americans for Freedom. These records include materials, such as administrative files, newsletters, and correspondence, and generally date from the period that Hall was chairman of the chapter. The correspondence discusses such matters as how to expand membership and improvements to the newsletter. Hall’s notes on the conservative talking points and initiatives are also included throughout the collection. Records relating to the local college chapters at Towson State College (now Towson University), Johns Hopkins University, and the University of Maryland also make up a small portion of the collection and demonstrate how these groups participated in campus life and approached liberal groups and their views and actions.
