Biographical / Historical

Nelson Andersen (ca. 1888-1966) was born in Canandaigua, New York. Andersen married Helen Gildersleeve, who worked as a teacher. He worked for the Rockefeller Institute for twenty years as a technician before moving to Baltimore to work at City Hospitals. He retired in 1963. Andersen was interested in theater history, particularly Mississippi showboats, and acted in several productions with the Vagabond Theater. He died on October 3, 1966.

The collection is arranged into three series, Research Notes, Research Photographs, and Personal Photographs, which reflect the documents within.

Scope and Contents

The collection contains research notes and photographs related to Andersen’s research on Mississippi showboats. The research primarily focuses on the Chapman family, who invented the medium, but also includes information on the development of the flatboat and general theater history. A draft copy of his manuscript, “The Chapmans of the Showboat,” is included. Photographs of Andersen and his wife, Helen, at his retirement party are also part of the collection.
