Purchase from Colonel F.H. Harford and John Roland Phillips in 1888 and 1894 respectively.

Scope and Contents

The Calvert papers are organized into four sections. The first section, Maryland colonial history, features Cecilius Calvert's instructions to first colonists, conditions of plantations in 1640, proclamations, orders, council records, assembly records, land grants, court records and wills, rent rolls from 1640-1761, Native American affairs, relations with Virginia, and letters from Philemon LLoyd, Edmund Jennings, Daniel Dulany, Benjamin Taskar, and Horatio Sharpe.

The second part of the collection, boundary disputes, features documents on land on the Delaware Peninsula, disputes with William Penn, land records, extracts from British and American records, court proceedings, appointments of commissioners, surveyor's reports, maps, letters and miscellaneous items.

The third section, Avalon, contains patents and bounds of the province.

The fourth and final section, the Calvert family, contains grants, deeds, and other documents relating to land, etc., in England, personal letters and heraldic documents.
