Biographical / Historical
The Bard-Avon School was founded in 1892 as a school of “Expression, Drama and English.” The curriculum focused on theatre, stage makeup, music, dance, and art history. Students who completed the course of study would be “fitted to become teachers, platform readers, dramatic coaches, or to fill positions in theatre,” according to the school’s 1932 catalog.
The school temporarily closed in 1935 due to the illness of the headmistress, Mrs. Lowes, and reopened for the 1937-1938 academic year. The Bard-Avon School was reorganized into an Expression School and an Advanced Business School. The new curriculum included courses in relevant to business and secretarial work, such as typing and transcription. The school closed around 1967.
