Biographical / Historical

Christine Brown Penniman (1892-1967) was born in Springfield, Illinois to Stuart and Katherine Brown. A graduate of Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania, Christine was 26 years old in 1918 when she joined the Red Cross as a volunteer and was sent to France in the final days of World War I. She was in Paris when peace was signed, and witnessed the wild jubilation of a people who had been utterly devastated by the war.

While she was in France, Christine Brown met John Dushane Penniman, an American serving in the Army. After returning to the United States, they married in 1920 and settled in Baltimore, Maryland. Christine Brown Penniman remained an active volunteer in her community until her death.
