Scope and Contents
The Scarborough Collection consists of ledgers, notebooks, and day books from the family grocery store. The documents cover a period of over one hundred years from 1845 to 1957.
The bulk of the material is ledgers and daybooks recording sales made by the store. The main weakness of this collection is its failure to include any biographical information on the Scarborough family. It is known that Isaac Scarborough was the father of Calvin A. Scarborough and the grandfather of Lawrence Glasgow Scarborough. There is also no information about the store, if it was one or several stores, other than the day to day sales made during the years 1845-1957.
Principal names in the collection are Isaac, Joseph, Calvin, and Lawrence Scarborough and Sidney Cooper. The store owned by L[awrence] G[lasgow] Scarborough was called Pen-Mar Market and was located in Delta, Pennsylvania. The day book belonging to Sidney Cooper is from his farm, Slate Hill, in York, Pennsylvania. It is unclear how or if Sidney Cooper was related to the Scarboroughs.
There were United States Official Postal Guides [4] dates January 1883, January 1884, January 1870, and January 1862 given to the History and Genealogy Department, Maryland Historical Society Library.
