Scope and Contents
Business papers of Thomas Swann, President of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company from 1848-1853. Included are letters concerning an investment in a silver mine, Baltimore and Ohio Railroad departmental expenses, and a reply to a Wall Street Journal article on railroad tariffs; resolution to appoint a commission to study railroad line changes, and resolution by Northwestern Virginia Railroad Company to express board sentiments on Swann's retirement from the Presidency of the company; financial reports; notes by Swann on board regulations and stock dividends and a proposal to the Virginia legislature setting the date for commencement of Northwestern Virginia Railroad service. Also included are a letter to William G. Harrison, President of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company about architectural services; a report by Swann on a fire at St. Paul's Church; and a map of railway lines owned and controlled by Southern Railway Security Company (1871).
