Scope and Contents
The collection primarily contains documents related to the business of Jesse Tyson & Sons. This includes correspondence from merchants and brokers in port cities across the globe to Jesse Tyson and his son, Thomas, discussing the prices of goods and market conditions. They also frequently received letters from ship captains who reported on the events of their voyages, including storms, illnesses on board, and encounters with other ships. The business papers and the records relating to ships in the Tysons’ employ included documents such as bills of lading, receipts, and bonds. The last box of the collection contains the papers of George, Jesse, and Thomas Tyson. These papers do not directly relate to the business as they include poetry, correspondence, and newspaper clippings.
