Letter from Rubens Peale to T.R. Wise about the gift of an axe that was manufactured during the laying of the first stone of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. Rubens Peale was an artist and Director of the New York Museum of Natural History and Science that opened on October 26, 1825. The Panic of 1837 put his museum into debt and he sold his collection to P.T. Barnum in 1843.
