Abstract
Papers (originals and copies, chiefly correspondence) of Jerome Napoleon Bonaparte, Sr. (1805-70), plus some correspondence of Jerome Napoleon Bonaparte Jr. (1830-93). Contains numerous letters from members of the Bonaparte family, including Napoleon III, Joseph Bonaparte (Count of Survilliers), Jerome Bonaparte, Achille Murat (American author) etc. Correspondents (some of one letter only) also include Robert E. Lee, Winfield Scott, General John A. Dix (extensive), Franklin Pierce, Lew Wallace, George Peabody, Lewis Cass, Roger B. Taney, Reverdy Johnson, John Slidell, John Pendleton Kennedy, Benjamin C. Howard, etc. Topics of interest covered include JNB's European travels in an attempt to gain Bonaparte legacies and recognition of his legitimacy; attempts to acquire a West Point appointment for Jerome Napoleon Bonaparte, Jr.; discussion of the effects of the Civil War on Baltimore and the South and on business; description of the organization of the Union Club of Baltimore; etc. Also correspondence relating to French-U. S. relations during the 1850s (including a confidential note carried by Jerome Napoleon Bonaparte to President Pierce, and other correspondence, regarding the difficulties of France with Patrice Dillon, Pierre Soule, R. M. Saunders, U. S. Secretary of State Marcy, the proposed U. S. purchase of Cuba, U. S.-Russian relations, etc.) and during the Civil War. Also includes copies of correspondence of Jerome Napoleon Bonaparte Jr. from the Crimea, describing the siege of Sebastopol, etc.; and his description of a trip through Virignia to White Sulphur Springs (1846); etc. Also bills (French and English) 1854-64, and checks 1855-69, of Jerome Napoleon Bonaparte and family.

Biographical Note
Jerome Napoleon Bonaparte, 1805-1870. Son of Elizabeth Patterson Bonaparte and Jerome Bonaparte. Nickname "Bo". Spent much of his time in Europe in litigation for his rights of inheritance, etc. as a legitimate Bonaparte. Married Susan May Williams and resided in Baltimore. His son Jerome Napoleon Bonaparte Jr. (1830-1893) went to West Point and served as a career soldier in the French army.
