Abstract
The Maryland tax lists are a large collection of tax records for Maryland and Washington, D.C. dated between 1798-1805. The collection contains general assessment lists, particular assessment lists, and general tax books or lists.

Scope and Contents
This collection contains general assessments, which are lists containing the names of owners, possessors or occupants of dwelling houses, lands, wharves and slaves. Property subjected to valuation, proerpty exempt from valuation, valuation as determined by the principal assessor and valuation as revised by the Tax Commissioners are also featured in the general assessment lists.
This collection also features particular assessment lists which are descriptive lists giving dimensions of dwelling houses, cut houses, etc. and lands.
Also included in the Maryland tax lists are general tax books or lists that give the names of persons by whom the tax is the amount of valuation, rate per cent centum.
There is a general assessment list for Anne Arundel County in a large bound volume, and particular assessment lists for the following hundreds:
Annapolis and Middleneck Hundreds
Broad Neck and Town Neck Hundreds
Elkridge and Elkridge Landing Hundreds
Lyons' Creek and Lower Herring Creek Hundreds
Patapsico and Magothy Hundreds
Patuxent and Huntington Hundreds
Severn and South River Hundreds
Upper Fork and Bear Ground Hundreds
Upper and Lower Road River Hundreds
West River and Herring Creek Hundreds.
There are bound combined general and particular lists for Baltimore City, in addition to an 1801 general tax book. These bound volumes cover the following areas:
Upper District of Baltimore City, all to the west of McClellan's Alley
Eastward of Jones Falls and Binding with the run that lands under the Causeway Bridge
Deptford Hundred, Fells Point
Western Precints of Baltimore City.
