Abstract

The entire collection consists of typed transcritps of letters of Archer family members in Harford County, MD and in Texas. The letters of John Archer, Stevenson Archer, Hannah Stump Archer, Thomas Archer, Dr. Robert H. Archer, Dr. George Washington Archer, and other family members are included. The letters provide insight into the actual nature of the westward movement of Americans and also provides clues to the motivating factors behind such migration. The letters contain family and neighborhood news, but they also contain comments on events of a broader scale. Items described in the letters include the journey to the western lands, physical surroundings, Indians, Mexicans, Commanches, social environment, California goldrush, and conditions in the South after the Civil War. Texas towns mentioned include New Braunfels, Sequin, and San Antonio.
