Carroll-Cradock-Jensen papers

The papers in this collection are divided into three groups, the Anna Ella Carroll section, the Cradock family section, and the Jensen family section.





The main portion of the Anna Ella Carroll section is made up of correspondence and essays dealing with the Civil War, especially with the Tennessee Campaign. Miss Carroll claimed to be the authoress of a plan to send Union troops up the Tennessee River in 1861 and demanded compensation from the government for her work. Much of the correspondence concerns that claim. Correspondents include Governor Thomas Hicks, Lemuel D. Evans, Abraham Lincoln, Benjamin Franklin Wade, Charles M. Scott, Edward Stanton, Samuel Hunt, and Mary H. Carroll. Essays included in this section are on topics such as natural rights, government, slavery, religious freedom, and Maryland's Toleration Act.





The Cradock family section is made up largely of deeds, some from the eighteenth century, papers concerning land sales, and papers dealing with the estates of Julia S. Cradock, Thomas Cradock, Arthur Cradock, and Katherine Cradock. Also contained in this section are newsclippings on the death of Arthur Cradock and the murder of Katherine Cradock, letters from Thomas Cradock as he travelled to Rio de Janeiro in 1884, and information on Trentham, the Cradock family estate in Pikesville, Md.





The Jensen family section is a combination of papers from Philip J. Jensen, his wife Kathleen H. Jensen, and their two sons Philip J. Jensen Jr., and Thomas Cradock Jensen. Included in the section are the wills of Kathleen H. Jensen and Philip J. Jensen, stock dividends, securities, bonds, and insurance policies of Kathleen H. Jensen, letters concerning Philip J. Jensen's membership in the Canadian Black Watch during WWl, and letters from Thomas Cradock Jensen while in the Air Force in 1954. Also included are sermons, notes, and prayers written by Philip J. Jensen while rector of St Thomas' Episcopal Church in Garrison, Maryland, and information about the church.





Collection also contains 25 volumes consisting of scrapbooks, account books, daybooks, diaries, some owned by Thomas Cradock, some by Thomas Cradock Jr., others by S. Carroll Cradock, and one by St. Thomas' Episcopal Church. Dates range from 1836 to 1960.
