Biographical / Historical
Dr. Thomas Granville Pullen, Jr. (1898-1979) was born in Madison Court House, Virginia, to Annie Brown Hilldrup and Thomas Granville Pullen. Through his mother's family, he was descended from the Taliaferro, Battaile, Grymes, Lindsay, and Walker families of Virginia, and of the Powers and Pinkney families of Maryland. A 1917 graduate of the College of William and Mary and member of Phi Beta Kappa, Pullen earned master's and doctoral degrees at Teachers College, Columbia.
Pullen first taught in Virginia public schools, then came to Maryland in 1926 as principal of the Catonsville High School in Baltimore County. In 1932, he began work in the area of school superintendency in Maryland, becoming State Superintendent in 1942, and presiding over desegregation of Maryland schools following the 1954 Supreme Court ruling. Upon his retirement of that post in 1964, he served as President of the University of Baltimore from 1964-1969.
A resident of Catonsville, Dr. Pullen was married to Louise Rowe Pullen, and they had a foster son, Thomas J. Stevens, who served in the Marine Corps.
