Biographical / Historical

James Edmondson Steuart (1872-1954) was a lawyer who lived at 1035 St. Paul St. and at a family estate, Mt. Steuart at South River (Edgewater), Anne Arundel Co. He was the son of Dr. James H. Steuart (1835-1892) and Ellen L. Duvall Steuart (d. ca. 1924), whose home was at 123 W. Lanvale St. in Baltimore, and the nephew of the famous General George H. Steuart (1828-1903) who served in the Confederate army. His grandfather was also a Generap George H. Steuart (1790-1867), who served in the United States Army and farmed in Anne Arundel County.

The Steuart family was descended from Scottish kings and connected by marriage with the Calvert family. There were many generations of medical doctors, military leaders, and a former mayor of Annapolis in the family, which was centered in Anne Arundel County. There was also Steuart family property in western Baltimore city, near the present intersection of Baltimore and Monroe streets, from which the neighborhood known as Steuart Hill took its name.

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of 2 boxes containing 355 modern photoprints made in the 1980s at the Maryland Historical Society from glass negatives created circa 1889-1903. Maryland subjects include Steuart family homes on St. Paul and Lanvale Sts. in Baltimore, Fort McHenry, and scenes around Annapolis. There are many scenes at "Edilius", evidently a summer home which may be in Maryland.

Outside of Maryland, subjects include New England water scenes (especially at Narragansett, Rhode Island), Cape May, New Jersey, Berkley Springs and Harper's Ferry, West Virginia, and Winchester, Virginia. There is an image of the ship Mayflower, and of a diorama of the Monitor and Merrimac.
