Abstract
This collection contains photographs of the Howard family home, "Sherwood," in Riderwood, Maryland. Also included are portraits of Katherine Hand Browne Howard, first wife of Benjamin Chew Howard. The dates of the collection span 1890-1905.

Biographical Note
Katherine Hand Browne Howard (1866-1908) was the first wife of Benjamin Chew Howard (1868-1930). The couple had a home known as "Sherwood" at Riderwood in Baltimore County. Katherine Howard was the daughter of William Hand Browne, an author and professor of English literature at Johns Hopkins University. Benjamin Howard was a great-grandson of Gen. John Eager Howard, Revolutionary War hero and former Maryland Governor, as well as a great-grandson of Chief Justice Benjamin Chew of Pennsylvania. His parents were William Gilmor Howard and Annie Boyle Howard. Benjamin Howard had four children, and married Elizabeth White Howard after the death of Katherine Howard at age 42.

The collection consists of one box with eleven folders containing eleven photoprints. The subjects are 1908 exterior and interior scenes of the Howard family home, "Sherwood" at Riderwood, Baltimore County, and portraits of Katherine Hand Browne (Howard) from circa 1890.
