Biographical / Historical
Harry Edward Elgert (1880-1965) was a Baltimore businessman who was active with the Baltimore Chamber of Commerce, serving as president of that organization in 1954-1955. Born and educated in Baltimore, he began working with J. A. Manger and Company in 1898, commission merchants dealing in grain, hay, and seed, remaining with the firm until retirement in 1964.
In 1901 Elgert married Sophia Elizabeth Krumrein (died 1947) in Baltimore and the couple had four daughters: Maurine E. (born 1903), Thelma Augusta (born 1904), Ruth Helen (born 1906), and Irma Elizabeth (1911-1966). The family lived on Arabia Avenue in northeast Baltimore, where Harry Elgert was active with the Beverly Hills Improvement Association from 1924-1946. Maurine married Foster E. Klingaman in 1925. Ruth married Oense Straatsma in 1929. Irma married Worthington E. Hubbard in 1935.

Scope and Contents
The collection consists consists of one box with five photographic prints made between 1901-1925. All photographs depict members of the family of Harry and Sophia Elgert of Baltimore. Several of the photographs are matte collodian prints, toned with platinum.
The collections includes five folders of printed ephemera relating to Baltimore organizations such as the Beverly Hills Improvement Association and the Chamber of Commerce. There are several oyster roast menus and advertisements for Baltimore businesses.
