Scope and Contents

This collection contains fifteen letters (1811-1828) from the Marquis de Lafayette (1757-1834) to Elizabeth Parke Custis Law (1776-1832). In these letters he discusses family and mutual friends; provides introductions for friends visiting America; and describes his travels in the United States during 1824-1825.

Other letters written by Lafayette in this collection are: one letter to M. Gerard, French Ambassador to the United States, regarding the American Revolution, 1778; one letter to Madame Barlow in Paris, 1813; and one letter to George Hay, 1825.

Additional items include: five letters to Elizabeth Parke Custis Law from Georges Washington Louis Gilbert de Lafayette (1779-1849), in which he discusses travels with his father in 1825; two letters to Law from daughters of the Marquis de Lafayette--Anastasie Louise Pauline de Latour-Maubourg (1777-1863) and Marie Antoinette Virginie de Lasteyrie du Saillant (1782-1849); and one letter from Mary A. R. Custis to her aunt in 1825.
