Gift of Mrs. Nelson Carter in August 1980.

Passed to donor through the estate of Charles Walter Jessop (1863-1948) of Baltimore County, Maryland, who was the son of Charles M. Jessop and grandson of Joshua Jessop.

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of two volumes kept by Joshua Jessop (1806-1869) who owned and/or operated a dye works in Baltimore County, Maryland. These volumes contain recipes for dyes and include samples of dyed cloth and yarns. The volumes also contain Jessop's notes on the carding of wool as well as notes and a glossary on Edward Bancroft's "Experimental Researches Concerning the Philosophy of Permanent Colors."
