Biographical / Historical

Kenneth Elsworth Stewart (1907-1969) was born in Havre de Grace, Maryland and lived most of his life in Baltimore. He attended Garey's Army and Navy Prep School in Baltimore and later entered Johns Hopkins University (class of 1930). In 1926 he joined the Naval Reserve, remaining with the unit until receiving a commission as 2nd Lieutenant in the Army on June 12, 1929. In the 1930s he was posted at the Civilian Conservation Corps camp at Westernport, Maryland. After being trained in tank warfare at Pine Camp, New York, he was sent to Australia and New Caledonia following the attack on Pearl Harbor. In 1943 he returned to the U.S. for training at Camp Polk, Louisiana, and was sent from there to England. He participated in the liberation of Paris in 1944. Major Stewart also fought in the Battle of Bulge and then served as Military Governor of the city of Zwickau/Saxony after the German surrender, until it was turned over to the Soviets. In 1954 he was recalled to service and became the commader of an armored warfare school in South Korea, helping to train the Republic of Korea (ROK) tank forces. He was awarded the Chungmu Distinguished Military Service Medal with Gold Star by the South Korean Government. In 1957 he was discharged from the Army and lived in Baltimore until his death in 1969.

Scope and Contents

The bulk of the collection was originally placed in three photo albums containing the photographs and documents collections by Lt. Col. Stewart. The first album contained photographs and documents from Stewart's time in the CCC through his posting at New Caledonia. The second album held the photographs and documents collected during the liberation of Europe in 1944-1945. The third album contained photographs and documents from Lt. Col. Stewart's serivce in Korea. Several panoramic photographs are also part of the collection> The photographs arranged in folders each containing ten to eleven photographs. They are placed in the same order in which they were placed in the albums, and are in approximate chronological order.
