Abstract

The James Doyle Print Collection contains etchings and prints created by Baltimore artist James Doyle. Doyle worked for various newspapers including the Baltimore Sun and the Baltimore News and was active in the Charcoal Club, Baltimore’s renowned arts club established in 1883.

Biographical Note

James Doyle (1880 – 1952) was a Baltimore graphic artist educated at Calvert Hall School and the Maryland Institute of Art. From 1903 to 1904 he served as the art editor of the Baltimore News. Following the Great Fire of 1904, Doyle moved to San Francisco, working for an advertising agency while there. In 1906 he returned to Baltimore and was hired as a staff member in the Baltimore News’s art department. Doyle later did free lance work for the Baltimore Sun, News, and other agencies. His work was also commissioned by private individuals including bookplates for H.L. Mencken and music critic Warren Wilmer Brown. Between 1915 and 1925 he was active in the Charcoal Club, Baltimore’s famous and long running arts club established in 1883. The club’s annual “Bal des Arts” was a celebrated social and artistic event in Baltimore.

Scope and Contents

The James Doyle Print Collection consists of 1 box containing 20 prints and etchings. Except where noted in the container list below, all were created by James Doyle. There are bookplates, etchings of scenes of Baltimore, invitations to the Bal des Arts, and other items. The collection also includes a few newspaper clippings and two biographical sketches of Doyle.
