Biographical / Historical
Anthony Gorton was a ship captain in Baltimore, Maryland. When he was not at sea, he lived at 61 Great York Street (now East Baltimore Street). Gorton captained ships for many of the city’s merchants. He was appointed master by Isaac Phillips & Co. aboard the William & Jane and the William Wilson for William Wilson & Sons.

The collection contains documents related to Anthony Gorton’s work as a sea captain, including papers such as insurance claims, correspondence, and manifests. Gorton sailed for several merchants and shipping companies in Baltimore, which are represented in the collection. He frequently worked for William Wilson & Sons and Isaac Phillips & Co. Of particular of note is a deposition for an insurance claim regarding damage to the sloop Active of Baltimore while in port in Savannah, Georgia.
