Abstract

The Robert L. Harris photograph collection comprises 137 glass and film negatives taken by Robert L. Harris, depicting life in Baltimore, Maryland in the first half of the 20th century. Topics include the Harris family, home interiors and exteriors, construction sites, businesses and cityscapes of Baltimore during World War II. Most of the locations depicted are unidentified.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Collection was acquired in 1955 and 1978 by the Peale Museum from William Calder Harris: Acc# 1955.3; Acc# 1978.18. In 1997 the Peale/Baltimore City Life Museums closed due to lack of funding. Their collections were transferred to the Maryland Historical Society in 1998.

Separated Materials

Additional photographs from the Robert L. Harris collection were given MC#### item ids and added to the BCLM Glass Plate Collection prior to the Peale Museum’s closing in 1998. These are noted in the finding aid and can be located through the MdHS library catalog as well as through the BCLM Glass Plate Negative Collection page.

Scope and Contents

The Robert L. Harris photograph collection consists of six boxes of 137 glass and film negatives, depicting life in Baltimore in the first half of the 20th century. The negatives encompass photographs of special family moments, like opening Christmas gifts, blowing out birthday candles, and trips to the beach. Also includes photographs of women, home interiors and exteriors, construction sites, businesses and cityscapes of Baltimore during World War II. Most photograph locations and subjects are unidentified. Identified locations include Towson Court House, Maryland Academy of Sciences, War Memorial Plaza, and Mt. Vernon Methodist Church.
