Biographical / Historical
The Darrell and Winder families were prominent in Maryland history from both the War of 1812 and the Civil War. The photograph album belonged to Josephine Winder Darrell, daughter of Charles H. Winder and Mary Sterett. Charles Winder was imprisoned and charged with treason against the Union during the Civil War and held as a political prisoner at Fort Lafayette. Mary Sterett was the daughter of Joseph Sterett who commanded Maryland’s 5th Regiment at the Battles of Baltimore & Bladensburg. Josephine married Stewart Darrell of Bermuda in 1872. They had two children, Mary who died at 18 and Harvey Cavendish who is pictured multiple times in the album.
