Biographical / Historical
World War I, known to contemporaries as the “Great War,” lasted from August 1914-November 1918. European coalitions were split between the Allied powers (France, Great Britain, and Russia), and the Central powers (Germany, Austria Hungary, and Italy). Millions died in the conflict as a result of technological and industrial changes that made warfare more deadly and brutal than ever before.
With the American entry into the conflict in 1917, the Allied powers gained the advantage they desperately needed to win the war. Nevertheless, thousands of American soldiers suffered and died on the Western Front.
