Biographical / Historical

George Riggs Gaither III was the son of George Riggs Gaither, Jr. (1831-1899) and Rebecca Harrison Dorsey Gaither (1833-1916). Born in Howard County, Maryland on 1858 February 28, he graduated from Princeton College in 1878, and the University of Maryland Law School in 1880. A prominent Baltimore lawyer, Gaither served as Attorney General in 1899 and was the Republican candidate for governor of Maryland in 1907, losing to Austin R. Crothers. He died of pneumonia 1921 October 17 and is buried in Baltimore’s Green Mount Cemetery.

John Gater (sometimes spelled Gather) arrived in Virginia in 1635 on the ship “Assurance” accompanied by his wife Joane and their two small children, John and Elizabeth. He settled in Virginia until 1650 when religious conflict drove him and approximately 150 other Virginians to Maryland because of its reputation for religious tolerance. A number of land grants were issued to him and his son John around the South River area including: Abingdon, Gater’s Range, Poll Catt Hill, and Roundabout Hill. John Gater died in 1652.
