Alice W. Hood collection
Abstract
This collection consists of the biographical and genealogical material concerning the Hood family of Maryland. Also included are the personal letters of Alice Watkins Hood, as well as business records and correspondence of her father, John Mifflin Hood, president of the Western Maryland Railroad Company.

Biographical / Historical
John Mifflin Hood (1843-1906) was born at Bowling Green near Sykesville, Howard County, Maryland on April 5, 1843, the son of Hannah Mifflin (Coulter) and Dr. Benjamin Hood. His family originally emigrated from England in 1688 and settled at Hood's Haven on the Patapsco River.
After being educated at the Green Lawn Seminary in Harford County, Maryland, and the Rugby Institute at Mt. Washington, Maryland, he joined the engineering staff of the Delaware Railroad in 1859. During the Civil War, he studied marine engineering and then joined the Confederate Army, serving first as an engineer, then as an infantryman.
In 1865, J. M. Hood became a surveyor and later chief engineer for the Philadelphia, Wilmington, and Baltimore Railroad Company. He joined the Florida Railroad as general superintendent in 1870. A year later, he became chief engineer of the Narrow Gauge Railways. In 1874, he was elected president of the Western Maryland Railroad and served in this post until 1901. At this time he became president of the United Railways of Baltimore, a consolidated street car company. He was head of this system until his death in 1906.
Alice Watkins Hood (1877-1956) received the degree of A.B. from Bryn Mawr College in 1898 and the degree of A.M. from Harvard in 1899.

Scope and Contents
Some of the Hood family's correspondence and memoranda from 1873-1956 are found in this collection. Approximately one-half of the papers are John Mifflin Hood's business and personal letters written during the period in which he was president of the Western Maryland Railroad (1874-1901) and president of United Railways (1902-1906). The remainder of the collection contains a few intra-family letters of various Hoods and many personal notes and letters that Alice Watkins Hood wrote from 1911-1956 about her travels, the Hood genealogy, and religion.
